July 28-30, 2011

Workshop Description:
The Masks: Persona and Power in Poetry
How far out of our own skins do we have to go to convincingly write persona? And how much of ourselves do we reveal when we pretend to speak with someone else's tongue? Everytime we write, we reveal parts of ourselves. At the same time, we can hide. What can hiding behind a mask allow? What will it hinder? When we use appropriated voices in poetry, we allow ourselves opportunities for excitement, revelry, and subterfuge. There's also the chance for blind motion and chaos. Whether you write straight from your personal history or pretend to use someone else's voice, each poem should reveal some hidden thing worth learning more about. Students' submitted work will be critiqued in class with an eye for harnessing a sustained and compelling voice. In the workshop we will also discuss revision strategies and learn ways to strengthen future poems.
